Ben Green, founder and Managing Director of Greenclean first
came to Koh Pha Ngan over ten years ago, when it was still considered
inaccessible and only for the backpacking community. He fell in
love with the island and its easy atmosphere, coming back
every year. Over the years Ben, and subsequently Tom Green, built
up strong friendships with some of the families that were starting
businesses on the island to cater for the growing tourist trade.
When Ben saw the potential for starting a business in Koh Pha Ngan,
the friendships that he had developed over the years provided him
with the help and advice he needed to set up the Company.
After a long and arduous struggle Ben had become the first "farang"
on Koh Pha Ngan to have the opportunity to buy land and operate
a business without a Thai spouse. The main significance of this
achievement is that Ben has formed a "watertight" private
limited company, an entity that is not susceptible to any unauthorised
take-over and is legally entitled to buy, develop and sell land
in Thailand.
Tom Green, joined his brother in Thailand as Buildings Manager and
Environmental Engineer for the construction of the holiday cottages
and restaurant. Tom, a graduate from the school of Civil and Environmental
Engineering at the University of Brighton, has also seen the potential
for land development on Koh Pha Ngan. He has decided to stay and
coordinate land acquisition and the building works that follow.
Greenclean Company Ltd was started in June 2000, when the Thai registered
company purchased of one rai (1600m2) of land on Had Chao Phao,
Koh Pha Ngan. This land is currently under development and is expected
to house a fully operational restaurant, swimming pool and five
holiday cottages by December this year. One further rai of beachfront
land was secured for housing development in Sri Thanu in January
this year.
